Utkal Sangeet

Udra-Magadhi, the branch of Indian Classical Music, with its roots in the Land of Jagannatha is now referred to as Odishi Music. With an almost endless repertoire of vivid compositions, set to traditional melodies, an emotionally appealing tone, or ‘Bhava’ found invariably in all songs, and exceptional wordplay by ancient Poets, its roots are deep in the cultural fabric of Odisha. It was born in the Jagannatha Temple of Puri, for reasons endless- first to appease the Lord, then to lull him to a sweet sleep, then to express worldly pain, and later, even to scold him. It still thrives in the pristine hinterlands of the Eastern State, as well as developed urban cities.

This site enables individuals to rediscover the invaluable literature and music through a digital interface. Let the age-old rich Odishi musical tradition not be lost in the dark chasm of modernity. Through this site, people can access all those traditional songs, with details of classical music in a clean, multi-device, web interface, which can be browsed anywhere, anytime. Songs can be searched by letter, poet, raga, tala, book and even based on the classification system in the musical texts. Some songs include English translations too.

And best of all, because of this mission to propagate Odia tradition and culture, all of the above are available for completely free.
